Mar. 22nd, 2003 01:05 amMy parents are independents, but my father leans Republican and my mother leans Democrat. (Both of them voted for Gore in 2000, though.) I was surprised to learn that Mom voted for Barry Goldwater in 1964.
"Jesus, Mom, nobody voted for Goldwater. Everybody thought he was a maniac. Why'd ya do it?"
"Why? Because Lyndon Johnson was a Texan, that's why!"
My mother spent her teenage years in East Texas and hated the place. (Years later she still calls it "Tex-Ass.") "The only thing a Texan cares about is the size of his schlong," she added. "They'll ruin everything just to prove they've got a bigger dick than the next guy." ("I'm not prejudiced," she assured me. "I don't trust Texans in either party." Thanks, Mom.)
The more I think about it, the more it seems to tell us about George W. Bush.
