"Order and Progress"
Apr. 8th, 2003 10:49 amI was just reading this article on Brazil's latest literacy campaign. The education minister noted that '20 million illiterate adults -- out of a national population of 170 million -- were incapable even of reading the "Order and Progress" logo on the country's flag.'
Y'know, maybe it's just as well they can't read the logo. From what I've heard, Brazil has plenty of virtues, but being "orderly" is not one of them. And Brazil's progress has often been disappointing. (As they say, "Brazil is the country of the next century ... and it always will be.") If the US put "Peace, Good Taste and Racial Harmony" on its flag I'd feel much the same way.
