I was fascinated by military coups in graduate school. They were going to be my dissertation topic, but political science is a trendy discipline, and people weren't interested in military politics in the early/mid 1990s. (An understandable reaction: Latin American armies had returned to the barracks, and for the most part they've stayed there. So coups d'etat were seen as yesterday's news.) So I turned to nationalism, and after huge delays finally got my degree, and my fat ass out of graduate school.

Anyway, I think we can understand US problems in Iraq by looking at coups.
