I had to be in Manhattan to send a FedEx package, and had a few hours to kill before I met [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething for dinner. So I stopped at "Jim Hanley's Universe," picked up the latest Knights of the Dinner Table, and got to the cashier just as the lights went out. So they pried the register open with a screwdriver, gave me my change, and I walked downtown, expecting only a neighborhood-wide power outage. (I was wrong, of course.)

I decided to catch [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething before she left the Flatiron building. I saw her and a group of her co-workers as they fled the building. We ventured off together in an expedition to Radio Shack and then to the Upper West Side, clawing our way through the hordes of tired, sweaty commuters. (One member of our party told us about a book from the 60s, which [she said] told you how to survive the end of civilization. It told you how to grow crops, kill livestock, milk cows, fight zombies, eat your travelling companions... Y'know, the usual self-improvement stuff. I don't know the name of the book, but goddam it, I want a copy!)

It it would've been romantic to spend the evening with [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething in her pitch-black apartment, but her mother was there so there were limited opportunities for hanky-panky. So [livejournal.com profile] dotsomething graciously dropped me off at [livejournal.com profile] bigscary's building, at same time Dave's delirious great-aunt showed up. We all climbed up the stairs and followed Dave through the sweltering catacombs to his apartment. [livejournal.com profile] arcane_the_sage joined us a couple hours later. Dave's aunt sat on the living-room bed, demanding TV and car service, while the rest of us argued politics in Dave's room. (I claimed the Republicans were not as bad as the Taliban, but the other two out-voted me.)

We went to bed soon after sundown, just like they did in the old days. Dave's place was comfortable even without air-conditioning, and I slept pretty well. We woke at dawn, and managed to catch a cab after 15 minutes of frantic waving. By the time I got home the power was already on, and within an hour or so I was back to work.
