Moon in a Blue Sky

I've never been satisfied with this picture. The figure is OK but the composition is poor, and I'd like to redo it some day. Ideally it would be in color and the figure would look like he's standing on the horizon, his image filtered through miles of atmospheric blue. The effect I'm looking for is the way the moon looks in the daytime sky, the crescent shining a slightly paler blue than the area around it. I'm not sure how to pull this off with the pen-and-ink I've grown accustomed to using. Any advice from the scribblers in the audience?
