Democrats Get It Coming and Going
Sep. 29th, 2006 12:35 pmThe Democrats are screwed by disunity once again. Most of them voted against the Military Commissions Act. For this their candidates will be labeled appeasers and traitors. A minority of Democrats backed it, either out of stupidity or cowardice, and by doing so have alienated and demoralized the party's core supporters. I still see the Democrats as the good guys in this fight, the Republicans (with a handful of honorable exceptions) as the villains. There are fewer people in my corner, though, than there used to be.
Update: According to the New York Times, the Democrats "agreed not to stand in the way of a final vote on the bill in exchange for consideration of amendments." These amendments would've alleviated some of the worst aspects of the MCA, and if they had passed, the compromise with Bill Frist may have been worth it. Unfortunately the amendments failed. Maybe the Democrats should've broken their agreement with Frist and filibustered the bill, but considering the margin of the vote it would've been a futile gesture. So I can forgive the Democratic leadership, but not the cowards and fools who voted for this represensible Act.
