I Suppose I Should Watch a Debate...
Feb. 2nd, 2008 02:18 pmPeople insist that Clinton is far more impressive in debates that Obama is. That would certainly be a point in her favor -- about the only point in her favor, but I'll take what I can get (since I'd like to feel good about the Democratic nominee, and Clinton is still the odds-on favorite).
Note that debate performance isn't the key to victory; if it was John Kerry would be President right now. Still, it's something to consider if Obama comes across like a bumbling fool in debates. (When it comes to the speeches, Obama is light-years ahead.)
Also, I'll say this to get people riled up: I feel, in general, this country has been far crueler to African-Americans than to women -- certainly in comparative terms to other developed nations -- and if we're only concerned with the symbolism of it, African-Americans "deserve" the Presidency more than white women do. Not that we should choose a President on that basis, of course, but since the symbolism argument is often trotted out in Clinton's favor, I think it deserves to be swatted down.
