A Look Back, Into the Abyss
Apr. 28th, 2010 11:39 amI'm happier with these political posts when I do actual research, however light it might be, like Monday's immigration post or this entry from 2003, when I noted the Bush administration's contradictory statements on Iraqi occupation.
If you check, you'll see the latter provoked a (suitably) enraged response from
bigscary; I tried to calm him down by saying their lying would hurt Bush in the end, and even Republican congressmen (getting the full-bullshit treatment) would get pissed off. In retrospect, I don't think the Bush team was lying; apparently they had no post-war plan and everyone was talking off-the-cuff. Republicans in Congress, meanwhile, gave the administration everything it wanted except for Harriet Miers and the bank bailouts. (I think they were justified on the first, and disgusting demagogic nitwits on the second.) It isn't clear that their dishonesty or cluelessness (take your pick) cost them anything, at least on the Hill.
It's worth revisiting those days. It looks like we may face a series of sovereign debt defaults that may lead to a "double-dip" recession. (More here.) If that's the case, Obama is toast, and Republicans will be back in control in 2012. I've seen no evidence that they're any more qualified than they were back then.
