Hey, kids! Here's a safety tip: If you've had a few bites of raw jalapeño, do NOT wash your mouth out with Listerine afterwards. It's a painful combination!
I love spicy food and use to pop Thai peppers for fun. Since Listerine is what I use daily it meant that I often encountered the same experience you are describing. Kim chi for dinner can also be interesting if you take a swig of listerine soon afterwards.
Sadly no milk in the house! And by the time I got to the store, looking for milk or (even better) ice cream, the crisis had already passed. I'll be sure to have some, though, the next time I go on any Adventures in Pepper Eating...
Pepto bismol will work in a pinch… so will miracle whip, mayo, yogurt, cottage cheese… ah the list goes on and on… oh yes beer works too, well only if you are already drunk.
I did something similar at WorldCon. Had the tinyest possible taste of mnemex's Amaretto -- the stuff he soaked the jalapenos in -- literally dipping the tip of a finger in and licking the finger. Five minutes later, it still hurt, so I took some bread. Gradually, my mouth settled down.
Then, I took a swallow of Mexican honey wine, and it woke everything up again. Yowch.
